Oballa Oballa joined us this morning to share about his journey to America and his involvement in the Austin community. He moved to America seven years ago as a refugee from Ethiopia. Oballa knew that he needed to get an education in order to be successful. He moved from Maryland to South Dakota where he joined Job Corp. Through this program he completed his high school diploma and built work skills. Once in Austin he wanted to find ways to give back to the community, so he walked to city hall and met with Mayor Stiehm. A few months after meeting with the mayor, he was appointed to serve on Human Rights Commission and has continued to serve the community of Austin. During this time, he attended Riverland Community College and is now completing his social work degree. Oballa encouraged students to see that they are the future and leaders of this community and that nothing can stop them from being successful! He reminded them that in order to be successful you have to have a vision. Oballa's biggest vision is for everyone in the community to be welcoming and love each other. He commented that everything always seems impossible until someone does it! Oballa's finally thoughts show his clear vision, "I am the first person of color to be on the Austin City Council and I hope my work is paving the way for immigrants in Austin so they can see they have a place and can succeed here." Thank you for sharing with our students about your journey and ways they can be successful in their future! Austin Public SchoolsPacelli Catholic Schools Oballa O Oballa
