Friday morning we met with Craig Byram and Carmel Taylor at the Austin Eagles. The Eagles has been a longstanding organization in the Austin community and they currently have a few hundred members. Their mission is to help people and the community. They have a bar, restaurant, bingo, pull tabs, and rental space. They have seen other service clubs close in our community, but have worked hard to keep the Eagles as a strong establishment in Austin. Over time, they have had to be flexible in their approach in order to maintain their organization. It was very interesting for the students to learn about the taxes on gambling, how this works, and the impact it has on the community. The profits from the club go back to support the community and this is a reason why clubs like this are so important to our community.
